Removing Hemorrhoids

What could be the side effect of hemorrhoidectomy?
I might consider removing my hemorrhoids through surgical procedure, but I'm too scared. I need the assurance that I get out alive from the operating room. Any word of wisdom?
A friend of my dad's had this done recently...he said only have this procedure done if it is absolutely necessary! Recovery was very painful...he said the first time he went to the bathroom it felt like he was shitting a thousand razor blades. If I were you I wouldn't go through with it unless you are in a serious amount of pain.
