How to get rid of hemorrhoids?

I've had one or two hemorrhoids for a few months, and have survived by applying prescription cream whenever I need to use the washroom.

Would getting a new prescription and applying it a few times a day get rid of them?
Is there any over the counter medicine that would actually get rid of them?
Are there any things I can do physically (exercises, avoiding certain stances etc.) to help?
Will they go away on their own?
If all else fails how does the doctor get rid of them? I've heard about them being cut open or having an elastic band put around them? How does that feel? Are there any other ways?
